Training - FSP Vanuatu Practical

Today 3rd of March 2007, heavy rain poured over Port Vila. The youths were tasked to test and report on FSP Vanuatu old computers and other pieces of devices gathered by FSP for assessment.

First they gathered and arranged all parts and pieces in order so they can be easily identified. Then assembled some bases and tested them if they could work so they can use them to test other parts and devices (e.g pci cards, printers, monitors, etc…). There were no working base to start but fortunately they have a laptop, and whatever device that can be connected to a laptop were tested.

FSP provided some training materials and during the device tests, more parts and name were explained. The youths were introduced to Microsoft Office programs, and they created a table in excel to list the items they have tested.

They tested 6 monitors and 4 printers, and took turns filling up their test result table in excel.

Over the weekend, some were provided laptops for exercises.

Training - Basic OS and Desktop

On the 1st of March 2007, 6 youths gathered around our training place and we had some hardware revision. We run through some basic hardware topics with new members before we started off our next lessons.

Then they were shown how Operating System loads. Our demo OS were Mandriva Linux and Windows XP. Also shown around a desktop and locate areas like main menu, icons, taskbar, etc… and in windows, my documents, my computer, start button. The difference between OS and other programs were explained. They were also shown computer drives that corresponds to the hardware devices attached and how to access them. Also the changes that happen when USB drives are plugged.

They took turns playing inside windows going through my computer, my documents, my music, playing music in windows media player and how to start a program by going through start->programs etc...

How BHCC youths are developing their PC skills

The youths have been provided a PC, pentium 4, with
dual Operating System (OS), Mandriva Linux and Windows XP. It has
Microsoft Office applications and the following for educational
purposes:-
+Audio/Video Playing and editing software
+GIS software (MapInfo, Mapserver, Autocad)
+Reading materials

The Thrill?. Everyday around 5pm the youths setup up the PC and play
keyboard and mouse games, test and feel the dual OS and play with
other softwares.

I believe this will help them develop their skills.

BHCC First Basic Hardware Training

1st training started with some hardware basics. Six boys gathered around a faulty PC unit outside a clearing and were shown parts and what the hardware devices are and how they are connected. The demobase and part were all faulty.

Basically, they can identify and label parts. How and where they are connected and general knowledge of the device's function. The most priority devices to have for a PC to work. How to handle naked or open PCs and what tools to use.

Note: This exercise was conducted 3 times with 3 different groups of boys. At a later excercise, paper diagrams were distributed aboutmotherboards and some general PC device terms in paper.
